Blurred vision (vision troublée st-jerome) is when you lose sharpness of vision and you become unable to clearly see small details.

Blind spots (scotomas) are dark “holes” in your visual field in which you cannot see anything.

You should always have your eyes examined for changes in vision, blurriness, blind spots, halos around lights, or dimness of your vision.   They could be the symptoms of an eye disease, aging, eye injury, or a condition like diabetes that affects many organs in your body.

Whatever the cause, vision changes should never be ignored. They can worsen and significantly impact your life quality.  Professional help is always needed. To help you in making a wise choice, the following descriptions may help:

• An optician dispenses glasses prescribed by an optometrist or an ophtalmologist and does not diagnose eye problems.
• An optometrist performs comprehensive eye exams and may diagnose eye problems. He or she prescribes glasses and contact lenses. An optometrist will identify any eye defect or any ocular disease.
• An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor specialized in the diagnosis and the treatment of diseases that affect the eyes.

When an eye problem is part of a general health problem, your general practitioner should take part in the evaluation.

If you have cataracts, you probably have blurred vision. Night driving makes you dizzy because you are dazzled and even blinded by the oncoming headlights of vehicles.

It concerns me to realize that parents and teachers are not always aware that a comprehensive eye exam done by an optometrist is critical to the child’s health and development.  Sometimes, they will think that the child is too young or that the visual test he or she had at school is sufficient.  Never wait until you notice something is wrong with your child’s vision to make an appointment for an eye exam, examen de la vue. 

At the very least, have your child undergo an eye exam before the start of school even if there is no family history or eye problems.  It is of the utmost importance to try and detect visual troubles or underlying health issues at a very early stage. 

A school vision screening test is not enough

The test will tell you how your child sees at distance, but will not test for common vision conditions or assess eye health. While school vision screenings provide a valuable service, they are not sufficient.

A comprehensive eye examination (examen de la vue) done by an optometrist includes:

• A review of your child’s health and vision history.
• Tests for nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, colour perception, lazy eye, crossed-eyes, eye co-ordination, depth perception and focusing ability.
• An eye health examination.

Since vision changes can occur without you or your child realizing it, have your child’s eyes examined yearly.

Keep on top of the situation.  Make sure your child has good eye health and a good vision in order for him or her to be successful at school and at sports.

Parents and teachers can be misled by a child’s poor schoolwork if he or she has trouble reading or spelling.  They might think that the child is lazy or something else.  Be aware that the child might have visual troubles, vision troublée, that go undetected.  An comprehensive eye exam will determine if the child has trouble seeing or not. 

You should have your child’s vision tested each year.  How can a child know that he has problems seeing when that is the only situation he  knows.  He or she might not complain about not seeing at the blackboard or seeing double because for them, it is normal.

            • Shut or cover one eye to be able to focus

A thorough eye examination will determine if your child has the best visual acuity he or she can get.  The exam will check for depth perception, binocularity, muscle balance and visual field, among other things.

You could experiment blurred vision, redness and/or excessive eye watering.  This syndrome is usually the result of a lack of fluid or a diminished tear production.

 Check for youself if you can identify with some of the following:

1. Environment: Air conditioning, forced heating, dry

 2. Aging: As we age, our tear production decreases. When you reach 65, the volume of constant tears will be half that what it was when you were 18.

 3. Incomplete blinking:  By blinking, the tears are spread across your eyes.  Dry eyes and nasal congestion can result from an incomplete blinking.

 Your eyes produce two different types of tears. Constant tears are produced continually  to lubricate the eye and because they contain natural antibiotics, they can fight infections.  The other type is the one produced when your eye is irritated following an injury or an irritation.

If you have astigmatisme,  light rays that enter your eye through your cornea will be focused in two different positions compared to being focused on the retina in the normal eye. 

The light is blurred along one plane and can be clearly focused along the other plane.  Your vision will be blurred at all distances.  Only a portion of what you see is in clear focus.

You will inherit astigmatisme from your parents and you are born with it.  It can increase slowly but generally, over time, it will remain quite stable. 

If you have astigmatisme, you most probably need to squint, you have headaches and your eyes seem fatigued. 

Generally, myopia and hyperopia will be accompanied by astigmatisme.
