Isn’t everyone supposed to go to online travel to sites like Kayak, Expedia, Priceline, orbitz, etc, and find rock bottom travel packages and cut out the middleman?  Wasn’t that the point they made on 30 Rock not long ago?  Well guess what…there is a migration back to traditional travel agents.  It’s so damn frustrating trying to find great travel deals at sites like Expedia.  It’s not as easy as they make it seem in their commercials.

I would rather have an online travel agent find a good deal for me…like a trip to my home town in St. Vincent.  I lived in one of those houses on the beach… in the picture below.  Gorgeous isn’t it?  Looking at it makes me homesick.  I need a vacation.

Now there are some things that we still need a middleman for.  Some people survive online using sites like Expedia, but many are lost and get frustrated like my mom and myself.  You see, dealing with a travel agent is still a human experience in a way that doing business on the internet is not.

Humans, you can talk to when booking travel, but an airline website…No!  It’s what you call, real backup.  When something goes wrong, you have someone to call…an expert travel agent.  And the great thing about it is, you don’t have to have a Brick and Mortar travel agency.  You can work from home…own a travel agent home business.

My friend was excited because she too decided that she was going to move to Asheville North Carolina and build her tiny homes. All she needs is some cheap but solid materials, small home plans, and a little help and she will be living a debt-free life.  It’s amazing how things are changing drastically since the downturn in the economy.  People are doing whatever they can to save money and survive this crisis.  It’s sad to say, but it has to get worse in order for it to get better.  So we have quite some time before we are out of the woods.  So this tiny house movement actually makes a lot of sense.

Since we don’t really own our real estate in the country, why not build our own tiny homes.  As far as finding the land to build the homes on, that can be rented for a small fee.  If you already have land…it makes life much easier.  I am thinking as I type that people who have mortgages and a nice sized backyard or maybe a garage could rent out their homes, convert their garages into a Tiny Home and live happily ever after.  Why not?  Well pride would cause lots of people not to do this.

The thought would be, “Who in their right mind would want to rent out their nice homes to others while they have to gather the small home plans to build pretty much what my husband calls a dog house.  Well that’s how he feels.  However, for some reason, I think it makes sense.  Do we really need a lot of “Stuff” to survive?  No…not at all.  So that should sum it all up.  We can live on very little and have a happy live.  Living with a lot of debt can be torture.  So I end this by saying, “More power to the Tiny Homes Movement.”

IN his 20s, Michael Janzen made pottery and lived in a cabin in rural California that he estimates was “about the size of a two-car garage.” After he married, he went into Web design for a bank, and now at 40 has all the trappings of a successful homeowner: in-ground pool, maid service, a yard landscaped with Japanese black pine bonsai trees. His 1,800-square-foot home in Fair Oaks, Calif., a one-story model by Streng Brothers, midcentury builders in the Eichler mold, is of a kind coveted by fans of modern design.

THE LILLIPUTIAN LIFE Some homeowners are using their new little houses as offices or retreats, like the 80-square-foot one owned by Michael Janzen. Others choose to actually live in theirs, like Dee Williams, whose 84-square-foot knotty-pine house has a tight but cozy interior. So why has Mr. Janzen spent the summer building an 80-square-foot “tiny house” out of free stuff he found on Craigslist?

There he is on nights and weekends, designing a floor plan whose dimensions are measured not in feet but inches, nailing scavenged wood pallets together for the frame, or fixing up an old trailer to serve as the foundation. The initial reaction from his wife, Julia: “Is this a Unabomber building?”

Not exactly. According to Mr. Janzen, he came to the realization that “I don’t want this life — the life of someone who’s working too hard to pay a large mortgage to live in this house.” The catalyst, he said, was watching the value of his home plummet with the rest of the real estate market, while the time and money required to maintain the property only increased. “The energy cost is enormous,” he said, “and the bigger your property gets, the more there is to do.”

Which is why Mr. Janzen has become interested in the small house movement, whose adherents believe in minimizing one’s footprint — structural as well as carbon — by living in spaces that are smaller than 1,000 square feet and, in some cases, smaller than 100. Tiny houses have been a fringe curiosity for a decade or more, but devotees believe the concept’s time has finally arrived.

My friend sent me an email regarding people looking for work moving in droves to North Dakota. I didn’t plan on posting anything like this, but I figure if I could help just one family without a job relocate and find work, then it’s worth my time posting it. Also, not forgetting that for entrepreneurs, there are lots of opportunities there.

My first reaction was…North Dakota? Is this for real? Well, despite the economic downturn in America, there’s a huge oil boom going on in North Dakota. Everybody’s working. Unemployment in Williams County, North Dakota is less than 1%. Could you imagine? Unemployment rate is less than 1% in North Dakota, while in the US on a whole, it’s up to 9.1%.

You can literally get off the bus and find a great-paying job within a few hours in North Dakota.  While others are desperately looking for work in other states, there’s a labor shortage in North Dakota. Yes, you read it right…a labor shortage. You can make $25 an hour as a waitress and $15 an hour working at Wendy’s, $80k driving trucks…average salaries are $70,000 – $100,000.

Businesses that are struggling in other states are setting up shop in North Dakota.  It seems that there is not a business you can start in North Dakota now that wouldn’t make it.  So this is not just a job boom, but for businesses also.

The only downside to this all is, due to the “Boatloads” of people moving to North Dakota everyday looking for work, there’s a housing shortage. New oil field workers are sleeping in their cars. In addition to housing shortages, it’s cold up there… below 20 degrees at night. If you’ve been desperately and you would not mind relocating, North Dakota is the place to be.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Workers are landing jobs that pay six-figures in the oil boomtowns of North Dakota. But the abundance of jobs and money comes with some steep trade-offs, including a lack of housing and extremely harsh winters.

At 3.5%, North Dakota’s unemployment rate is the lowest in the country. (Nationwide, the rate is 9.1%). But among the small towns that lie along the Bakken oil formation, like Williston, Watford City and Belfield, unemployment is just 1.5%.

Many of the highest-paying jobs are at oil companies, where workers make an average salary of about $100,000, often with little-to-no experience or need for a college degree. Halliburton (HAL, Fortune 500), Continental Resources (CLR), Hess (HES, Fortune 500) and Whiting Petroleum (WLL) are among some of the biggest players in the area. And jobs include everything from working on a rig to hauling crude and equipment in trucks to helping with administrative work, said Shawn Wenko, workplace development coordinator for the city of Williston.

But it’s not just the oil companies that are hiring. The oil boom has brought such a big influx of people that every single industry — from hospitality to retail — has been hit with overwhelming demand as a result.

Driving down Main Street in the more than 20,000-person town of Williston, N.D., which has the highest average salary in the state of a little more than $57,000 and about 2,500 job openings at any given time, you’ll see one hiring sign after another.

At fast-food chains, the going rate is about $15 an hour. Hair salons, pharmacies, banks, hospitals, gas stations, bars and clothing stores are also desperately looking for employees and paying a pretty penny to keep them from defecting for the oil fields. Even the local strip club is booming, with dancers making up to $3,000 a night.

“If someone doesn’t have a job here, they don’t want to work,” said Wenko. To find a job in Williston or any of the nearby oil towns, including Stanley, New Town, Tioga, Dickinson or Minot, check out North Dakota’s official job service portal, Job Service North Dakota, or visit job portals or Craigslist.org where there are several local postings. But before picking up and moving across the country, there are a couple things to remember.

Many of these jobs — especially those working for the oil companies — require grueling hours and physical labor — from lifting equipment to getting dirty performing maintenance on oil wells. As a truck driver or oil field worker, in order to earn all of the coveted overtime pay, many employees only get 3 to 4 hours of sleep a night and then have to go straight back to work.

Tagg is a collar-attached GPS which transmits back to a base at home. Before fitting the collar, proprietors will into the system an appropriate range for the pet. As soon as the pet leaves the acceptable range, or “geofence” in Tagg parlance, an e-mail is sent to the owners’ telephone.

Producers of the Tagg product also promote that it might be used on cats as well, as long as they weigh 10 pounds, or more. In the United States, Tagg is offered to Verizon telecommunications clients. At presentt, no deal has been worked out with a Canadian phone service to permit the system to operate north of the border, but it surely won’t be long before dog owners on each side of the border have access to this product.
